Alvin TX

For over 60 years Froberg's Farm has been providing Alvin and the surrounding communities with a large variety of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts and a variety of Froberg's own homemade pies, preserves, salsa and meats! With breezy, open air market shopping, Frobergs claims to be the 'largest open air farmers market' in the area, and offers not only fruit and vegetables, but has branched out to include flowers, freshly smoked meats and sausage, an outdoor living area with bar-b-que pits, custom made picnic tables and swings, a garden center and seasonal items for shoppers. Located off CR 190, you have to cross the tracks to enter the driveway; and you really have the whole country farm experience. They have really good specials on different items. You will definitely find something here. They have fresh pinto beans, which are delicious!! It is a fun way to buy fresh food and is even just a good weekend outing trip. 'What makes us unique from other businesses that are selling groceries is that we are a real family farm. My grand-father started it, my dad operated it, and now I plow the ground and operate the farm with the rest of the family working here,' said Alfred Froberg. When asked about the best thing about working in the home-owned, home-grown business, Mrs. Froberg said, \'I love flowers. I love living things. I never get tired of fruit and I never get tired of flowers...there\'s always something beautiful, and something beautiful and something living are gifts from God.\' The specialty in the produce market is homegrown watermelons, sweet corn and tomatoes and strawberries. You can even pick your own. If it isn\'t grown on the Froberg Farms, it is purchased from area farmers, and the market is open 12 months out of the year. People say, \'What makes it better than if I bought it at the grocery store?\' and I say that the difference is we pick it fresh...that day... and in a matter of hours, you can be serving it on your table. That\'s something you can\'t experience if you get it from chain stores, added Froberg.

Tours are available by request during May and November, Monday through Friday. This wonderful family owned and operated farm is located on County Road 190. For more information call 281-585-3531.

Take a break from living in the fast lane and stroll through the award winning Shimek’s Gardens, located one mile west of Alvin’s city limits. Enjoy the beauty of over 850 different types of Daylilies, hundreds of roses and a large variety of other flowers that all play a part in attracting butterflies and hummingbirds. The peak time to visit is May through July. Harvey and Nell Shimek Erica Bird decided we would enjoy being a National Display Garden for the American Hemerocallis Society. A National Display Garden represents the national society by growing hundreds of different daylilies from hybridizers all over the United States. The names of the daylily and its hybridizer are labeled, with beds that are maintained year round. Shimek’s Gardens is an official AHS Display Garden. A display garden is a setting for daylilies growing in a natural environment. We grow about 850 different cultivars, plus thousands of our own seedlings, which means as a result of spreading pollen from one daylily onto the pistil of another, a unique daylily evolves. We also grow roses, hibiscus, jatrophas, and many unusual plants. Our original goal was to have year-round color in the garden, and we are pleased that we have achieved our goal. We are both exhibition and garden judges for the American Hemerocallis Society. Nell is also a National Council of State Garden Clubs Flower Show Judge. Our Celebration of Daylilies is an ongoing adventure that we practice daily. We still consider ourselves hobbyists, with a hobby that has gotten completely out of hand. \'It is something that Harvey and I can enjoy together, hoping to pass the love of gardening and hybridizing to our grandchildren,\' remarked Nell Shimek. \'We enjoy hybridizing, and always look forward to seeing our first babies bloom. We love to share the beauty of the daylily with visitors that come to the garden. A special treat of ours is to welcome folks who come, so please come to celebrate the daylilies with us.\'
